MY TESTABLE QUESTION:
- Does Catnip affect dogs?
- Will watering a plant to much make it die?
- Does watering plants with different color water affect a plant? - If I put a few drops of food dye in a cut flowers vase water each day, will it affect the plant? Will it affect different plants? Will the plants turn the color of the dye?
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
My independent variable would be the different colors of food dye.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
My dependent variable would be the conditions of the flowers.
2. Investigate the Information:
NOTES/FACTS:
Facts about food dye:
- Food dyes are known as a "Rainbow of risks"
- dyes are linked to cancer, hypertension in kids, and allergies
- 3 dyes carry carcinogens, 4 can cause serious allergic reactions, and 7 dyes lead to cancer
- 15 million pounds of dye is poured into foods each year
- it is believed that Red 3, Citrus Red 2, Red 40, and Yellow 6 should be banned because they can lead to cancer
- Evidence suggests that Blue 1 & 2, Green 3, Red 40, and Yellow 6 caused cancer in animals
- are natural and made of synthetic dyes
- used for foods, medicine, hair dyes, and make- up
- all food dyes have one or more certified color additives, propylparaben, propylene glycol, and water
- RED FOOD COLORING INGREDIENTS:
- propylene glycol
- propylparaben
- water
- FD&C reds 40 and 3

Facts about the Xylem and Phloem:
Xylem:
- 1 of 2 types of transport tissue
- xylem comes from the greek word meaning "Bark"
- best xylem tissue is wood
- can be found in vascular bundles, secondary xylem, and as part of a stelar arrangement
Phloem:
- Phloem is the living tissue that carriesorganic nutrients (A.K.A. photosynthatel) in particular glucose
- phloem means bark
NOW THAT I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH, I PREDICT THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION WILL BE:
After doing a ton of research about different dyes and flowers, I definitely predict that something will happen to the flowers. I think that the flowers are going to change color with some of the darker food dye colors, like blue and red. But, I also think that if I put too much dye in it will kill the flower.
3. Plan A Procedure:
1.Pick up all of the materials that I need to use in the project
2. Put 4 different types of flowers in two sets of vases ( one set all white flowers, and one set all different flowers in food coloring
3. Put 3 drops of food coloring in the plants water each day
4. Put food coloring in for 2 weeks
5. Every day record the changes seen in the flower
6. After 2 weeks overlook the flowers and see how they have changed from day 1 or, if they even did change
4. What I'll Need:
8 vases
4 tubes of food coloring
8 flowers (White and Cut)
Water
I have these: I need to locate these:
I have a few vases, but I may need to locate 3 or 4 more
I will buy food coloring (Red, Blue, green, and yellow)
Will buy 8 flowers (All white carnations and cut carnations)
And I obviously have water
(This is the chart with all the information and changes that the flowers had daily. I didn't know where to put it, so I put it here with the original blank data sheet.)
The data shows that . . . . For everyday there was some kind of change for each flower, or even the water for the flower. As the days went on, there were more and more changes, like some of the ends of the pedals on the flowers were dying, or one pedal was all colored and the others only had spots of color.
Therefore, I conclude that . . . . Everyday of my project was successful. On the first day of experiments, my flowers already had some type of color on them. Some did take a little longer than the others, but either way, by the end of the two weeks of experimenting, my project was successful. Even the flowers that stayed plain white were successful.
But was my work valid? .... My work was valid. Everyday, there was food coloring put in my flowers' water. I added 3 drops each day. Every Saturday, I was at my dads, but my grandma or mom would put color in. Everyday, just before I would put more drops in, I would record what was changed on the flowers. Then, I would put the drops in, and wait until the next day to observe and record again. The only days that I did't have data on were the Saturday days, because I was at my dads and my grandma or mom didn't record the changes. 7. Bibliography http://www.noodletools.com
